This flexible online education program is intended to give you the opportunity to balance job, family life and other responsibilities among busy adult learners. You can wake up early to engage in internet conversations with the comfort of internet teaching, log in to study during your lunch hour, or finish your course work late at night –whatever works for you and your timetable! To participate in this class you must have access to an Internet connected computer with appropriate software installed. Refer to the supported hardware list and required software listed. This course will be available on the first day of class through Canvas.
This course is an introduction to fundamental Information Technology / Information Systems concepts and Information Security. The course includes practical exercises with spreadsheet, database, and Internet applications. With over 750 million users worldwide, Microsoft is the traditional tool of choice for business productivity. We will learn concepts related to the latest version of Office, including suite-wide integrations and program-specific features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. We will also learn about navigating and utilizing cloud services on the internet and project management techniques that will enhance your skills as a professional and as a student. We will also explore improved accessibility, the new charts and graphs, VBA coding in Office, and professional file and folder management. We will explore how to make these features part of a more productive and efficient Office and creative workflow. This course impliments courseware that incorporates a Paathways to Piplines accelerated, step-by- step, project-based approach. Students also develop an understanding of key ethical issues they will face in the context of using information technology. **Please be aware that you should be familiar with the keyboard and should be able to type in order to keep up with the class.
The student will demonstrate fundamental understanding of computer hardware by correctly identifying and explaining the function of subsystems and components such as CPU, memory, buses, ports and I/O devices
Given a random topic, the student will demonstrate understanding of and competence in the application of Internet search techniques by creating and refining searches in at least two different search engines
Given a spreadsheet with data and graphs, the students will apply standard statistical inference procedures to draw conclusions from the data
Given a database with multiple tables and the requirements for a report, the student will create a report that logically groups data and produces subtotals

Students are encouraged to note the course assignments and test dates on a calendar.
Students are responsible for saving completed work on their USB flash drive or cloud drive. However, all assignments must be submitted through Canvas to receive any points.
Periodically make a copy of the files saved on your USB flash drive to your personal computer hard drive and virtual drive.
It is the instructor’s right to drop any student with excessive absences. This means lack of assignments/tests’ submission and lack of course participation.
If you are unable to complete the course, it is YOUR responsibility to either drop the course online or get a drop card from the Admissions and Records Office (for information (Call 909-384-4401) to withdraw from the course. Failure to officially withdraw from this course will result in an F grade.
Failure to attend class meeting(s) or failure to submit initial assignments during the first week of the class will result in the student’s being dropped from the class.
After the first week of class, a student may be dropped if work assignments are routinely ignored and not submitted.
Students are expected to take responsibility for helping to create a quality classroom environment.
