Game development is a hybrid field, drawing from the fields of computer science, mathematics, and production. As such, the jobs with development studios that are available to game development graduates are similarly diverse.
So, What is game development? Generally speaking, video game development is the field that spans the entirety of the many aspects involved in creating a video game, from conception and storyline to graphic design, programming, and public release.
Video game development is a field with many sub-disciplines and responsibilities drawing from both game production and game design, but what are the roles on a development team?
  • Game producer
  • Game artist
  • Programmer
  • Graphic designer
  • Creative writer
  • Storyline editor
  • Audio specialist
  • Level designer
Students studying video game development will become familiar with both the overall process of creating a video game and game production, as well as the particular elements of software engineering, programming, and graphic design utilized in the actual construction of the video game.
THE CAVE
This independent study assignment. You must manage your time appropriately to ensure you have time to complete all the tasks.
This activity will teach you how to take advantage of using classes when creating an application or game. You will be expected to use what you learn here inside your own project.
In this assignment, your team will create a GDD (Game Development Document) for your next game. Remember, a GDD is what your team would like the game to become. It is a living document and can be changed at any time depending on new ideas or other circumstances. Everything in the GDD may not be how the game turns out but will have the fundamental mechanics as described in the GDD.
The Documentation (group)
The documentation section is a group assignment. Complete the following steps:
  1. Form a group: This can be a group of students in your class or people you recruited from other classes. (An individual can act as a group, if so desired.)
  2. Review the video tutorials to see the type of game you will be creating.
  3. Develop the story that will drive the ideas of your game.
DEVELOPMENT (Indi)
This part of the project is individually completed. Complete the following steps:
  1. Generate a logic sheet for how they think the game will function. (See tutorial in the study area)
  2. Add a map of your game's rooms or caves using your favorite programs like Google Slides or PowerPoint.
  3. Make sure the Map and the logic sheet are representative of how your game will be function.
Game Development (Indi or group)
You will follow along with the tutorials provided in the resources to complete your game.
